January Goals: Starting The Year Off Right!

January 5, 2013

When you ask a household that is primarily male for their New Year’s Resolutions, you shouldn’t be surprised by what you get. Little did they know I’d be framing it and hanging it in the tea room.

Happy New Year Provision Room Readers!  We hope you have been enjoying a long, relaxing and enriching holiday season with those you love!  We had a nice long bloggy break, didn’t we?  Did you miss us?  Well, we are refreshed and back in full-force.  Strap on your roller skates, Preppers.  We are going to get some stuff done!

Our goals this month are in the context of starting the year off right.  Every once in a while we need to step back, take stock of things, see what’s working, what needs tweaking, what needs updating, and to get a fresh plan for tackling our most important goals.  What better time than the beginning of the year?!  Now, we aren’t talking about unrealistic resolutions, which surely will be broken by February 1.  We are talking about a realistic bit of planning and preparation for the months ahead.

And remember, please, that our mantra here is BABY STEPS!  Slow and steady wins the race, dear friends.

1. Nutritional Reset.  I don’t know about your family, but ours have been on a little binge of sugar, carb overload, fried stuff and constant snacking!  We don’t regret it, of course.  This has been a season of feasting since the beginning of Advent, through the feast of St. Nicholas, throughout Christmas and New Year’s and until January 6th, which is Epiphany!  Would have been scandalous to fast or deny ourselves too much when the season commands feasting!  I mean, who would really choose a carrot stick over sticky carrot souffle?  Or whole wheat toast and herbal tea over donuts and hot chocolate?!  But that season is coming to a close and we are feeling the need for a little nutritional reset.  We aren’t calling it a detox or a diet.  Oh no!  This is not about punishing ourselves for our indulgence.  It’s just about resetting our bodies so that we are in tip-top shape for back-to-school and the work ahead!  What does this mean for us?  For starters it means cutting out the sweets, increasing the fermented foods and ultra-nourishing things like bone broths and greens.  It also means getting in that regular exercise and getting to bed at a decent time.  Be looking for posts for ways to do this as a family that is enriching and enjoyable for all!

2. Tidy-up those Provision Rooms!  After a busy season of guests and parties and special foods and crafting, our provision rooms (pantries, spice cabinets, fridges and freezers) are looking a little helter-skelter.  This month we will take a little time to clean up, clean out, and see how we can be more efficient.  This might mean we need to get our handymen (God bless our husbands!) to build us more shelves, drawers or do some heavy lifting. We’ll post pictures to our Flickr stream, so be looking for that.

“Legend has it, when the Santa Anas blow, anything can happen.”  –Jack Black in The Holiday

It’s been a little more than a year since the Santa Ana winds knocked out the power to our entire valley for nearly a week.  This is a good time of year to go through our emergency supplies (gas in generators, candles, flashlights, etc.) make sure everything is in good working order, well stocked and that we know where everything is!  We’ll have a cool PDF for you that will help you to keep all these emergency supplies organized as well!

Join us this January in starting the year off right!
