Food Revolution Day & A Farm-To-Table Dinner

Why do we need a Food Revolution?

After all, in the United States our food is seemingly abundant and easily accessible, right?  When it comes right down to it, the answer to this question is no.  Real food as we define it, whole food in its natural form, based on cultural diets, and minimally processed, is not accessible or affordable to everyone.  Sadly, in the United States 1 in 6 people are unsure of where there next meal will come from.

Here in the Provision Room, we’re also concerned with the amount of processed foods available on every corner. Processed foods are calorie dense and nutrient depleted.  This is the first generation where life expectancy is shorter than the previous generation.  We are a people walking around overweight and malnourished.  You couple this issue with a general loss of cooking skills and families are on the brink of destruction.

For the first time in history, being overweight is killing more people than being underweight.

Center for Disease Control (CDC) statistics show that nearly 34% (1 in 3) of adults over the age of 20 are obese and nearly 20% (1 in 6) of children between the ages of 6 and 19 are obese.  (CDC Source 1, CDC Source 2)

According to the CDC, tens of thousands of people die each year due to obesity related illness and those living with obesity often suffer from one of the myriad of preventable western diseases including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility.

We have to start making intentional choices about what we eat and what we feed our children!

Jamie Oliver is leading the charge in bringing awareness regarding the state of our food and food education.  He is working “to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.” (Jamie’s TED Award Wish)

We think he is doing a great job so we’re doing our part in supporting his stand for real food and Food Revolution Day, by hosting a Farm-To-Table dinner for local pastors and their staff.  The purpose of the Provision Room event is to highlight the need for churches to be involved in the sustainable food movement. Because churches are already well integrated within the community there is much they can do to help.

All this week we’ll be keeping you posted as we prepare for our Farm-To-Table event.  Our kids are even going to be sharing their thoughts on Food Revolution Day, real food, and the sustainable food movement.
