Prayer For Week of March 26 – Spring Cleaning!

I think that no matter how old or infirm I may become, I will always plant a large garden in the Spring.  Who can resist the feelings of hope and joy that one gets from participating in nature’s rebirth?  ~Edward Giobbi

Is anyone else looking out the window at the drizzly Spring day, seeing a few budding flowers and feeling as if the world is sort of holding its breath, waiting for the Spring?  From somewhere deep inside me has come the desire to Spring Clean!  Perhaps it is the fact that Passover is just around the corner with Easter following just a few days later.  I feel as if I should open up all the windows, air out all the bedding and tackle that pesky cobweb in the upper corner of the living room ceiling.  I feel as if my physical house wants a breath of fresh air.

Did you know that Spring Cleaning has its roots in the Passover ritual of Bedikat Chametz?  That is where houses are practically turned inside out in order to remove all leaven.  Furniture is moved and swept under.  The vacuum must tackle all the couch cushions.  All the cupboards are wiped clean.  This removing of all the leaven–including crumbs that hide, is a symbol of  removing sin–even the sin that hides–from our lives.

Along with the desire to fling open the windows of my physical home, there is a deeper connection and desire to fling open the windows of my heart.  Time for the Holy Spirit to shine the light of revelation on anything that is hidden, time to get rid of old things that are weighing me down, time for things to be fresh and clean and new!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Hebrews 12:1.

Although, Spring Cleaning, be it of the house or the heart, is a daunting thing and is tough work, there is joy in it.  It is not drudgery, nor a frightful thing to avoid.  It’s something that comes with a lot of grace.  With every counter that sparkles, with every pillow set right, with every bag of clutter removed from the house, the house feels LIGHTER and full of PROMISE!  The promise of Spring!  Likewise with my heart.  With every unnecessary thing laid aside, with every forgiveness sought and every offense forgiven, my heart feels LIGHTER and full of PROMISE!  The promise of Redemption!

“But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”  Acts 20:24
Will you pray with us?

Lord, we thank you today for new life!  For Spring!  For Redemption!  For Passing Over!  May You impart to our hearts the whisper of the promise of what is to come.  We offer up all our efforts and we receive in exchange Your joy and grace to enjoy the process and to see the beauty to come.  Amen.

Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world.  ~Virgil A. Kraft
